About Chemeketa Community College

Chemeketa College was founded in 1952, when the Salem School District started the Salem Technical Vocational School to provide training for the unemployment. However, only two programs, Nursing and Electronics were offered unfortunately, in 1957 all the students were lost in a fire at the district office. Therefore, in 1969 the college district was formed and “Chemeketa”, which means “A peaceful gathering place” in the language of the Kalapuya tribe was approved by the Board of Education. Now the college has an annual enrollment of approximately 30,000 plus students each year in a district that covers 2,600 square miles. And over gather at Chemeketa each year to study intensive English or an academic program.
